St. Thomas’ airport is the most widely used gateway to the U.S. Virgin Islands. The following airlines offer service from the U.S. mainland to St. Thomas:

Local airlines offer service between St. Thomas and St. Croix and other destinations in the Caribbean. The following airlines provide service between St. Thomas and St. Croix, and San Juan and St. Thomas/St. Croix:

Taxis are common throughout St. Thomas. Buses run regularly between Charlotte Amalie and Red Hook (on the eastside of the island) and Charlotte Amalie and Bordeaux (to the west). For more information, call the VITRAN office at 774-5678. Charlotte Amalie also offers city buses for local transport and to and from the airport.


Most major rental companies and several local rental companies rent automobiles on St. Thomas, offering everything from four-wheel-drive jeeps to luxury sedans and minivans. Most major roads are well-maintained asphalt. Please remember to obey all speed limits, wear your seat belt, and drive on the left!


Passenger ferries from St. Thomas to St. John depart from Red Hook (on the east side of St. Thomas) and Charlotte Amalie. Schedules are as follows:

– Red Hook to Cruz Bay, St. John: 6:30 am and 7:30 am, then each hour 8 am to midnight

– Cruz Bay to Red Hook, St. Thomas: Each hour, 6 am to 11 pm

– Charlotte Amalie to Cruz Bay, St. John: 9 am, 11 am, 1 pm, 3 pm, 4:00 pm, 5:30 pm

– Cruz Bay to Charlotte Amalie, St. Thomas: 7:15 am, 9:15 am, 11:15 am, 1:15 pm, 2:15 pm, 3:45 pm

Ferries to and from Red Hook and Cruz Bay take between 15 and 20 minutes; ferries to and from Charlotte Amalie and Cruz Bay take approximately 45 minutes. Frequent car ferries are also available between Red Hook and Charlotte Amalie on St. Thomas to Cruz Bay, St. John. Visitors may also travel to Puerto Rico and the British Virgin Islands from St. Thomas by ferry.

Seasonal ferry service (November – May) is available between downtown Charlotte Amalie and Gallows Bay, St. Croix via¬†V.I. Fast Ferry. The V.I. Fast Ferry’s “Salacia” is a 600-passenger ferry with a ride time of about one hour and fifteen minutes.
